VERO BEACH, Fla. Engineered Asphalt Materials (EAM), a Gencor-equipped hot mix asphalt plant in Vero Beach, offers a free online asphalt tonnage calculator that helps contractors estimate how much hot mix a job needs before they place an order.
The asphalt tonnage calculator asks for three measurements: length in feet, width in feet and thickness in inches. It returns estimated tons along with the job's area in square feet and volume in cubic yards. The tool uses a standard compacted density of 145 pounds per cubic foot, and users can change the density field to match the mix they plan to use, since typical hot mix asphalt runs about 140 to 150 pounds per cubic foot.
The calculator is built for the work EAM's customers do every week, including road resurfacing, parking lots and driveways. A built-in tip reminds users that 1.5 to 2 inches is typical for overlays, while new construction and heavy traffic usually call for 3 inches or more.
EAM presents the result as a planning estimate. Actual weight varies by mix, so the company asks customers to confirm density and final quantity with the plant before ordering. Contractors can then call or text the plant to confirm their mix, tonnage and pickup window.
The calculator sits alongside other planning resources on the EAM website, including a mix specifications reference covering Superpave gradations, PG binder options, polymer-modified mixes and specialty mixes, and an online form for requesting a mix design.
Contractors who are unsure which mix fits a job can describe the application to the EAM team, which can recommend the mix type, grade, tonnage and scheduling. Orders placed ahead of time help the plant schedule production so the mix is hot and ready at pickup.
