Engineered Asphalt Materials is a Superpave asphalt supplier in Vero Beach, producing SP-9.5, SP-12.5 and SP-19 gradations paired with performance-graded binders, including polymer-modified PG 76-22. Contractors across Indian River, Brevard, St. Lucie and Martin counties pick up at our Gencor-equipped plant at 500 2nd St SW.
This page explains the Superpave mixes we list, where each fits, and how to confirm availability for your project.
What Superpave is
Superpave, short for Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements, is a mix design system built around how pavement actually performs. Instead of picking a recipe by habit, the aggregate gradation, binder grade and compaction effort are selected for the traffic and climate the pavement will see. The goals are resistance to rutting in heat, resistance to cracking, and long service life.
FDOT and most other agencies specify surface and structural mixes using Superpave gradations, which is why you will see SP designations on most engineered plans in Florida. At our plant, surface and structural mixes are produced to Superpave gradations, and base course work uses BM-1 base mix.
The Superpave gradations we list
The number in each designation is the nominal maximum aggregate size in millimeters.
SP-9.5: fine surface mix
The smallest stone size, giving a tight, smooth surface that places in thin lifts. It is our recommended mix for residential streets, pothole and repair work, and the surface course on HOA and private roads. It hand-works well, which helps on patches and tight areas.
SP-12.5: surface or structural mix
The middle of the family. SP-12.5 works as a wearing surface or a structural layer, which makes it a common choice for residential streets, commercial pads and parking areas.
SP-19: structural or base mix
The largest stone of the three, built for strength and load distribution. It is used as a structural or base layer on commercial pads and parking and as the base under an SP-9.5 surface on HOA and private roads.
Performance-graded binders
Each gradation is paired with a performance-graded (PG) binder chosen for loading and climate. Binder options listed on our specifications page:
- PG 64-22: standard performance grade
- PG 67-22: standard performance grade
- PG 76-22: polymer-modified, for high-stress duty
The polymer-modified grade flexes under load and recovers, holds its shape at intersections and under stop-and-go traffic, and stays stable through high pavement temperatures. It is the choice for high-stress intersections, trucking routes and industrial facilities.
Matching the mix to the job
Our mix selection guide by application:
- Heavily traveled roads: Superpave, polymer-modified
- Residential streets: SP-9.5 or SP-12.5
- Commercial pads and parking: SP-12.5 or SP-19
- HOA and private roads: SP-19 base with SP-9.5 surface
- Pothole and repair work: SP-9.5 fine surface mix
On an engineered or agency job, the plans control. Order the gradation, traffic level and binder exactly as specified. On a private job without a spec, describe the traffic and the layer and our team will recommend the mix type, grade and tonnage.
Why Superpave matters in Florida
Treasure Coast pavement sits in heat for much of the year, and the common failure is rutting: wheel-path grooves where slow, heavy traffic pushes softened asphalt aside. Superpave addresses that with a strong stone skeleton and a binder graded for high temperatures. Heavy rain is the other stress, so proper density matters. A well-compacted Superpave mat keeps water out of the pavement and the base below it.
Where water is the bigger concern, our specialty mixes, including open-graded friction course and porous asphalt, are options to discuss alongside the Superpave gradations.
How we keep Superpave mixes consistent
A Superpave design only performs if the plant produces it the same way on every load. Our Gencor equipment provides stable temperature control and precise mix accuracy, and quality control happens on site:
- Sampling and testing of asphalt mixes during production
- Monitoring of mix temperatures and consistency from batch to batch
- Checks against the specifications required for each project
- Documentation to support contractor, developer and municipal requirements
We produce mixes that meet FDOT specifications depending on project requirements.
